Background to Fraunhofer CAP and Fraunhofer in the UK
Fraunhofer Gesellschaft created the new Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics in a strategic collaboration with Fraunhofer IAF. The Centre is a hub for industry-driven laser research and technology for a variety of sectors including healthcare, security, energy and transport.
At the same time Fraunhofer established its UK headquarters, Fraunhofer UK Research Limited, which is the headquarters organisation for all additional UK-based Fraunhofer research centres in the future.
Fraunhofer CAP is based in the University of Strathclyde’s world- class Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) (scheduled to be completed in 2014, move in April 2015) which will transform the way universities, business and industry collaborate to find solutions to global challenges, create jobs and support the economy. Prior to the TIC facility being ready, Fraunhofer CAP is operating from new high-quality premises in Glasgow city centre.
Fraunhofer CAP is funded by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the University of Strathclyde, the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council. Fraunhofer CAP is expected to be the model for more Fraunhofer research centres around the UK.
